We are finally making some progress on the chicken house. We got it mostly inhabitable and then let the heat and humidity keep us from finishing anything. We got shutters installed (need to paint them--what color would you choose?) and a window box installed (need to plant flowers now), a real perch in place with poop plank underneath (seriously essential to a cleaner coop), a separate food area (really these chickens are pigs), some stepping stones, a working gate and a brick retaining wall that needs more landscaping. I really miss the dirt from the Midwest. The kind where you can just stick your shovel in the ground and dig. And then plant. I took it for granted.
Anyway, still need nesting boxes, and SOON! These chickens will be laying in the next few weeks. It's funny, they are as old as I am far along pregnant. So we are 15 weeks. Chickens reach maturity anywhere between 16 and 20 weeks, so it could be any week now! Hopefully someday the weather will be pleasant and not sweltering and I can finish the coop completely.
